AUGUST 2024: M’SIA LOSS 1-4 IN FUTSAL FINAL AS SEVEN PLAYERS DOWN WITH FOOD POISONING

SURABAYA, June 30 (Bernama) — The Malaysian futsal team participating in the 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG 2024) probably lost the gold medal even before the final today at the Gelora Olahraga Rakyat (GOR) Futsal Universitas Negeri Surabaya field (UNESA) kicked off as seven players suffered food poisoning.

Team manager Addy Shairullyzam said the players looked lethargic even before the start of the final, while three of the first-choice players had to receive intravenous drip treatment.

Despite the shortcomings, the players decided to play in the final because the gold medal was at stake.

Although the boys tried their best, Malaysia had to compete for the silver medal after losing 1-4 to Indonesia.

“Half of the players in the squad suffered food poisoning, which resulted in diarrhea and vomiting, and the medical team had to put a number of players on IV drips. The medical team did a great job.

“Although we did not win the gold, the players were determined to play until the final whistle. We tried to score an early goal, but the players’ fitness was affected and their energy level was also low,” he told reporters after the match here today.

Addy added that the cause of the food poisoning has not yet been determined as all the players consumed food served at the hotel where the contingent was staying.

Malaysia’s only goal in the match was scored by Muhammad Syarifuddin Md Akhir in the 38th minute. The scorers for Indonesia were Dewa Rizki (3rd and 9th minute), Brandyca Piola (11th minute) and Ramadhani Zidani (34th minute).
