Conor McGregor placed a massive $60,000 bet ahead of the Euro 2024 tournament.

Conor McGregor placed a massive $60,000 bet ahead of the 2024 European Championships, but the chances of that bet actually coming to fruition appear slim.

The Irishman, whose UFC return against Michael Chandler has been postponed due to a toe injury, is a big football fan and attended the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The avid Manchester United fan is also friends with Cristiano Ronaldo and recently joined him on the ring during boxing matches in Saudi Arabia.

He first met the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in 2016 at his Las Vegas gym and eight years later McGregor was seriously supporting Ronaldo at this summer’s European Championships.

Ahead of the spectacle in Germany, the UFC two-weight champion used $60,000 of his estimated $200 million fortune to support ‘CR7’.

With Duelbits, McGregor placed a large bet that Ronaldo would win the Golden Boot during the tournament.

He posted a screenshot of the betting slip with the caption: “60 G’s on Cristiano Ronaldo to retain his European Championship Golden Boot. Siuuu!”.

McGregor managed to secure odds of 14/1 for Ronaldo to be top scorer, with a payout of $840,000 if he outscores the rest of the team.

But it was an ambitious bet from McGregor anyway and the chances of it coming true now seem even smaller.

Although Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to compete in six European Championships, he has yet to score this year.

Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity in the round of 16 against Slovenia when a penalty kick from extra time was saved by Jan Oblak.

After bursting into tears, the Al Nassr striker recovered to score the first penalty in the shootout in Frankfurt.

Diogo Costa saved three consecutive penalties for Slovenia to send Portugal through to the quarter-finals, where they will face France.

The Euro 2024 top scorers list is headed by Germany’s Jamal Musiala, Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze and Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz, who all scored three goals.
