England fans humiliated after leaving Euro 2024 last 16 match for Jude Bellingham’s goal

Fortunately, the vast majority of fans remained in Arena AufSchalke as England saved themselves from an embarrassing elimination in the round of 16, beating Slovakia 2-1 after extra time.

Ivan Schranz put a crafty, well-drilled Slovakia on course for their greatest victory as an independent nation, but Bellingham left its jaws on the ground and incredulous players on deck in Gelsenkirchen.

Five minutes into injury time, the midfielder’s bicycle kick sent the match into extra time. Captain Harry Kane headed Southgate’s team through this tough match in the round of 16.

Switzerland await in the quarter-finals on Saturday and England will be looking to build on the spirit shown at the end of a match that looked set to end in a result resembling their defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Southgate has overseen vast improvements since taking charge shortly after that tournament eight years ago, but he was again met with a mixed reception as England scraped through. Before kick-off, some booed Southgate’s name as it was read out over the stadium’s PA.
