Fire Rescue Victoria is looking for several recruits

FIRE Rescue Victoria (FRV) is seeking a new generation of career firefighters to deploy to stations across the state, based on the operational needs of the organisation.

The recruitment process lasts six to twelve months and consists of several test phases, including a written selection test, a group assessment, a shuttle run, a personality profile, a physical fitness test and a selection interview.

All training is provided and applicants do not need any previous firefighting experience.

Instead, candidates are selected based on their behavior, suitability and motivation.

Deputy Commissioner North and West Michelle Cowling said FRV firefighters “come from all walks of life”.

“We want our workforce to reflect the diversity of the community we serve.

“We are looking for people who reflect our values of integrity, responsibility, respect and community, teamwork and strong problem-solving skills, with the right all-round strength and fitness.”

Deputy Commissioner for North and West Michelle Cowling said firefighting was not an average job and it stood out because of the significant impact it has on the community.

She said firefighting was an “exciting and rewarding career” and encouraged community members to apply if they want to “make a difference” through both emergency response and community education.

“Firefighting also offers great opportunities for role specialization and career development, and our people receive world-class training and support throughout their careers,” Ms Cowling said.

“Firefighters receive a range of benefits, including hours that provide a good work-life balance and a competitive salary.”

With successful candidates from FRV’s upcoming recruitment campaign set to begin their training in the middle of next year, Ms Cowling could not confirm how many recruits will be based in the Geelong region.

Although firefighting has traditionally been a male-dominated profession, with 95 percent of the workforce being male, FRV is calling on women to explore and apply for a career in firefighting.

“FRV has invested in programs and support to enable our workforce to better reflect the community we serve and as such we encourage more women to apply,” said Ms Cowling.

“Firefighting is not an ordinary job. It stands out because of the profound impact it has on the community.

“We want women to look beyond the mundane and find a career in fire service that is exceptional and remarkable.”

FRV Fire Brigade applications open today (Monday 1 July) at 12:00 noon and close on 8 July at 12:00 noon.
