Gatorade RI Boys Track Athlete of the Year Zack Del Sasso Coventry

His last meet in Rhode Island didn’t go the way Zack Del Sasso would have liked, but he made up for it after the graduation ceremony.

And now, before he heads off to university to compete, the Coventry graduate has one more trophy to collect.

Del Sasso put together a great season throwing the hammer for the Oakers, but failed to medal at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Track and Field Championships. He refocused, made a big throw when it mattered most at the New Balance Nationals, won gold and now adds another award as the 2023-2024 Gatorade Rhode Island Track and Field Player of the Year.

The senior from Coventry had a stellar spring campaign and it got even better at the Class A Championships, where his throw of 223 feet, 3 inches won the meet and became the No. 1 hammer thrower in the country. Del Sasso was the favorite to win gold at the state meet but failed to win a medal, finishing 10th with a throw of 194 feet, 8 inches.

Del Sasso made amends later that month when he competed at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, where he set a personal best on his throw of 224 feet, 5 inches to win the boys’ title by more than 3 feet.

The circle wasn’t the only place Del Sasso excelled. He volunteered for the Coventry Unified volleyball and basketball teams and donated his time to the Special Olympics on behalf of the Rhode Island Alternative Academy Foundation.

In the classroom, Del Sasso graduated with a 4.28 weighted grade point average and will attend and compete for Northeastern University this fall.

Del Sasso is only the second Coventry boy to be honored by Gatorade, the other being Brian McGovern for boys basketball in 1991-92.

Del Sasso is the first Gatorade winner from Coventry since Samantha Higgins won the girls volleyball award in 2013-14. He is also the sixth Gatorade winner in school history, joining Elise Fortier (softball, 2008-09), Jenna Riley (girls cross country, 2008-09) and Eryn Wheeler (girls track and field, 2008-09).
