Gregg Berhalter to be fired from US men’s national team

The U.S. Men’s National Team has produced yet another disappointing tournament outing, and it’s time to make some immediate changes. Of course, in most cases, the blame can’t be placed entirely on one person. But in this case, the majority of the blame must be placed on Gregg Berhalter.

Since Berhalter took over as head coach of the USMNT, he has failed to record any win against any of the top 15 international teams outside of Mexico. What’s more, one of the worst losses in recent years came last month, when the Americans lost to Panama for the third time in history in the Copa America tournament.

So far in 2024, Berhalter’s team has won three, drawn one, and lost three times, conceding 14 goals and scoring just 10. That’s disappointing. The Americans are truly in a golden generation of talent, and it’s being wasted by Berhalter’s failures.

That’s not to say Berhalter wouldn’t fit in anywhere else, but he’s certainly not a good fit for the United States.

As for who could potentially take over if Berhalter is fired, there are a few routes. One option is to look for good MLS coaches and sign one of them. Another option, which seems to be gaining popularity, is to go after a former USMNT player. One notable candidate for fans is Landon Donovan, an American who knows how to win, loves representing the red, white and blue, and can identify much more with the players.

This change needs to happen quickly. With the 2026 World Cup on American soil, the United States Soccer Federation needs to choose a new coach now, so they have time to settle in with the players and implement their ideas and style of play. A result like the USMNT has produced in previous tournaments, including the Copa America, will be seen as an absolute failure, especially if it is on home soil.
