Min Woo Lee sparkles at Rocket Mortgage Classic, but falls just short

play

Min Woo Lee fell one stroke short of claiming his first PGA Tour victory at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic after a stunning back nine in Sunday’s final round at Detroit Golf Club, but he undoubtedly made even more fans along the way.

Lee, already a social media favorite, started the day three shots behind the leaders and entered the par-5 No. 7 hole sitting at 1 under par for the round after birdieing the third hole. After chipping onto the green with a chance at par, Lee three-putted from just outside six feet for a double-bogey 7.

It looked like his chances in the tournament were gone.

But Lee, a three-time winner on the European Tour, quickly recovered to birdie the eighth hole. With that he gave the 25-year-old Australian, who is affectionately known as ‘the chef’, a great finish.

Lee birdied No. 10 to kick off his back nine, then found birdies at Nos. 14, 15 (another chip-in and fist pump) and 17 to take the lead with Akshay Bhatia at 18 under par, which led to the eighteenth hole. The crowd cheered “Woooooo” and “Let Him Cook” as Lee battled his way back into winning battle, and the crowd following him and amateur Luke Clanton noticeably grew larger on the 16th hole.

The saying “Let him cook” comes from a meme, but in an interview with Golf Digest last year, Lee explained why he likes the saying so much.

“It’s a gaming term,” Lee said. You play COD (Call of Duty) in a 5 vs. 5-person game and one person remains. When someone in the background tells him what to do, someone else says, “No, just let him cook.” Let him do his thing.’”

Lee hit a 286-yard 3-wood to the center of the fairway on the par-4 18th, but the approach shot sailed the green into the thick rough 32 feet behind the hole. “I hit him so good,” he complained to his caddie after the hit. His chip rolled past the hole and slid into the rough, leaving him 46 feet from par.

Lee hits the ball on the green, but the ball rolls only 14 inches from the hole. This means Lee no longer has a chance to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Lee, whose older sister Minjee has won two majors, finished the tournament with a score of 3-under 69 and 17-under 271 to tie for second place.

Cam Davis won the Rocket Mortgage Classic after Akshay Bhatia bogeyed the 72nd hole with a three-putt.
