Tony Hawk reveals whether he would dust off his skateboard for the 2028 Olympics

Tony Hawk explained why he won’t return to professional competition permanently as skateboarding is back on the agenda at the Paris Olympics this summer.

“I don’t think you want to see me competing at 60,” the skateboarding icon recently told People magazine when asked if he would compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

He continued, “That probably doesn’t bode well. But as a fan I will definitely be there.”

The comments from Hawk, who once famously landed a 900 at the X Games and largely retired from professional competition in 2003, come as skateboarding is set to make its second ever Olympic appearance this year with a larger field.

Hawk applauded the Games, calling skateboarding a step that is “great for the international growth and equality” of the sport.

“People think that the Olympics are, I don’t know, somehow sanitizing the place. But the competitions are organized exactly as they have been for the last 30, 40 years,” he said.

“So it’s not like they’re reinventing the wheel or creating competition in our sport. It’s just that it’s more accessible now and has a wider audience.”

The skateboarding icon attended the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and served as a commentator for the action.

Hawk stated in a 2014 interview with Larry King that the games “need skateboarding more than we need them” and cited the sport’s popularity.

Last month, he told NBC Insider that it’s fun to see the sport “maturing.”

“To see it grow; to see the inclusion factor; to see … parents encouraging their kids to skate now (that) it’s an Olympic sport. It’s such a perfect time for skateboarding,” Hawk said .

Hawk told People that he is “tremendously proud” of skateboarding’s inclusion in the Olympics.

“I’m proud that it’s there, and I think it’s great that a kid who chooses to skate now knows there’s support for them,” he said.
